Just in Case There is a Word Your not Sure about
Here are The Meanings Behind the Words.
Account name or
Login name or Username is
the unique short word assigned to identify a
particular user of a network. Account names are used
in email addresses and have a password associated
with them to prevent unauthorized use in dialup or
ftp applications.
Alias is one of possibly many
email addresses for a mailbox. An alias essentially
facilitates sorting of your mail to your various
mailboxes. A default alias is a technique used to
catch all mail to a domain that has not specifically
been given an mailbox or alias email address.
Anonymous FTP allows you to
grant access to certain files for any visitors
without a password with the FTP protocol.
ASP or Active Server
Pages is a language based on visual basic
to make pages interactive.
Auto-responders are program
robots that automatically reply to incoming email
with a pre-written form letter.
Browser is an application that
allows a user to "surf" the web and display html
pages in human readable format.
CGI (Common Gateway Interface)
is the glue behind web pages that allows forms and
interactive pages to work. CGI is a formal
specification that allows you to call programs from
your web pages. Access to Perl, PHP, and the ASP
scripting language is included with all our plans.
Dialup refers to a connection to
an ISP where a computer or network becomes part of
the Internet for the duration of the connection.
Disk Space is the physical space
allocated on a server to hold your email, web pages,
data and scripts.
DNS (Domain Name System) is the
protocol used for naming computers on the Internet.
Networks are given domain names to identify them on
the Internet.
Domain name is a unique
hierarchical name for a computer network. For
example host-one.net is a domain name, which may be
composed of hosts www.host-one.net and
ftp.host-one.net, which may be different computers.
Since a domain name is usually a hostname, a domain
name often refers to both a network and a specific
computer within that network. A domain name is used
to configure URL's and email addresses.
Domain registration is the
process of creating a new domain name which allows
you to maintain your personalized or corporate
identity on the Internet. Most web hosting plans
includes domain name registration and hosting of the
form www.your-company.com under any TLD (top level
domain) of your choice (subject to the rules of that
TLD) including .com .net .org .com.au .org.au .co.nz
.co.uk etc. Once a domain is registered it must be
delegated to become visible to the Internet
population.
Domain delegation is the process
of making a domain visible to the Internet
population by assigning authority for that domain to
a particular computer that is configured as a DNS
server. This service is provided by your IPP. If you
change IPP's you will need to re-delegate your
domain.

Domain re-delegation is the
process of moving the authority for a domain name to
a new computer that is configured as a DNS server.
These services are provided by IPP's.
Email is the electronic
equivalent of the standard postal mail service. You
can send most multimedia files and text through
email. Email is not a real time service since email
is spooled and sorted prior to being sent to a
remote destination. To send files in real time use
FTP. Many ISP's limit the size of email, so it is
recommended that larger files are transmitted via
FTP as well.
Email address is the electronic
equivalent to a postal address. An email address
like name@some.domain.com, has three components,
"name" is some persons account, the "@" symbol
signifying "at" and a domain "some.domain.com"
signifying the network that the user belongs to. A
valid email address must have all these three
components for email to be delivered correctly.
FAQ or Frequently Asked
Questions is a document that answers just
questions that are common to a subject.
FTP or File Transfer
Protocol, which is method of transferring
files in real time between computers.
FTP access is provided on a 24/7
basis to maintain your pages. Develop your pages
locally and once ready upload your pages using your
favorite FTP client.
Home page counter is a numerical
counter that is provided with all plans to give your
visitors feedback on the number of hits to your
pages as seen all over the web.
Hostname is a name for computer
in the DNS. A hostname can also act as a domain name
for a network. Sub domains can be added to the left
part of hostname to refer to computers in that
domain.
HTML or Hypertext Markup
Language is the underlying language used to
define web pages which a browser will receive and
convert to human readable format.
HTTP is Hyper Text
Transfer Protocol as used by the World Wide
Web.
https is the secure encrypted
version of http used when transferring sensitive
information.
IAP or Internet Access
Provider specifically refers to an ISP that
is providing Internet connectivity.
IPP or Internet Presence
Provider is a company that specializes in
providing web hosting and other related applications
services.

ISP or Internet Service
Provider is a company that provides dialup
access or connectivity to the internet and other
Internet related services.
Login name is an Account name or
Username used to dialup up to an ISP. Login name and
account name are used synonymously.
Mailbox is a place that receives
electronic mail (email) and has an email address.
Mailboxes usually have some disk space limit.
Network is a group of connected
computers.
NIC (Network Information Center)
is an organization usually commercial which has
responsibility for management of a particular top
level domain name (TLD) within which you can
purchase registration of a domain name. NIC are
responsible for delegation and re-delegation of
domain names and that the correct authority is
received for all transactions.
Perl is a very powerful
interpreted programming language used to develop
complex web sites. You can learn more about Perl at
www.perl.com.
PHP is a server side embedded
language used to develop interactive web pages. You
can learn more about PHP at www.php.net.
Raw Log file access is a log
that updates at every data transfer from your web
pages so you can monitor who is looking at your
pages.
Search Engine is a service that
actively indexes the web to allow users to find
information.
SSI's or Server Side
Includes enable you to embed dynamic
content in your web pages. SSI documents are parsed
by the server before being sent to the client. You
must use the file extension .shtml to use SSI's
SSL is Secure Socket
Layer which web servers use to encrypt
forms such as payment details for secure transfer
across the Internet. We use 128 bit encryption
technology to make interception virtually
impossible. SSL is used as the https protocol.

Statistics are detailed
consolidation and analysis of the raw log file data,
updated weekly.
Subdomain is the left most part
of a host name. For example given a name
www.host-one.net. "www" is a subdomain of "host-one"
which is a sub domain of "net". "net" in this case is
a top level domain (TLD) , all host names must
belong to a TLD. Parts of domain names are separated
with a ".', meaning you can't use "." in hostnames.
TLD or Top Level Domain
is the right most part of a domain name. Two letter
TLD's like "au" for Australia, "uk" or United
Kingdom etc, are predefined for all countries and
the special tld's .com .net .org are predefined for
the USA, although these can be used by anyone. TLD's
are maintained by one or more NIC's which charge for
the process of registering ie creating new domains
within their TLD.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
is the naming standard used with browsers to locate
files and computers and the protocols used to access
them.
URI (Universal Resource
Identifier) is a more general or generic term for
URL.
Username refers to a Login or
Account name. These are all used synonymously.
Web is shorthand for World Wide
Web (WWW), generally refers to the collection of
hyperlinked multimedia pages on the Internet.
Web hosting is the process of
making html pages and related applications visible
on the Internet's World Wide Web protocol using a
web server.
Web server refers to software or
a computer configured to run web hosting and deliver
web pages and multimedia content across the Internet
using the WWW protocol.
WWW (World Wide Web) is a
collection of protocols used to display multimedia
content in browsers. "www." is conventionally used
as a prefix to a host name to specify that the
computer is configured as a web server.
